Official reports from aims on great barrier reef health status
This report summarises the condition of coral reefs in the Northern, Central and Southern Great Barrier Reef (GBR) from the Long-Term Monitoring Program (LTMP) surveys of 94 reefs conducted between August and June (reported as ‘’). Below are a summary of the report is provided: Over the past 38 years of monitoring by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), hard coral cover on reefs of the GBR has decreased and increased in response to cycles of disturbance and recovery.
Why aims research is crucial for understanding marine biodiversity in the great barrier reef
To understand the effects of these pressures, AIMS provides essential data on the status of coral and fish communities and how they are changing through two programs – the Long-Term Monitoring Program, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Monitoring Program.
